The Good Life

The Good Life was a classic 70's british sitcom for BBC1 from 1975 to 1978, written by Bob Larby & John Esmonde. There was 30 episodes of The Good Life screened which made them household favourites.

The Good Life followed the lives of Tom (Richard Briers) & his wife Barbara Good (Felicity Kendall), who since Tom's early retirement, have decided to live off their own land, leading a totally self-sufficient life. With vegetables growing, goats, chickens, & a pig or two running loose, the suburban couple just about manage to survive, much to the dismay of class-conscious next door neighbour Margo Ledbetter (Penelope Keith) & her less conscious hubby Jerry (Paul Eddington).

The Good Life attacks the middle-class & the 'alternative' lifestyle. Showing Margot's snobbishness as blindness, & Tom's fanatical self-sufficiency as going too far.

In a good-natured light hearted way, Tom & Barbara showed how hard it was, & is, to be different to those around you & the kind of courage it takes to be so.

The Good Life showed the talents of Richard Briers, Felicity Kendall, Penelope Keith & Paul Eddington. They all became solo star after The Good Life. Kendall became a sex symbol, Keith was in The Manor Born, & Eddington in Yes Minister.

Briers went on to play the character of Martin Brice in Ever Decreasing Circles.
