Fawlty Towers

Fawlty Towers is a popular British comedy set in the 1970's,starring John Cleese as Torquay hotel owner Basil Fawlty, & Prunella Scales as his domineering wife Sybil.

Basil Fawlty.

Basil Fawlty played by John Cleese is snobbish & miserly misanthrope, desperate to belong to a higher social class. Basil is terrified of his wife Sybil Fawlty's sharp tongue.He yearns to stand up to her, but his plans frequently fail. Sybil is frequently abusive towards Basil, & he always seems to be on the recieving end of Sybil's temper expressed verbally & physically. Basil normally turns to Manuel or Polly to help him with whatever scheme he has planned, while trying his hardest to prevent Sybil from finding out.

Sybil Fawlty.

Sybil Fawlty played by Prunella Scales is Basil's domineering, energetic wife, with a destinctive laugh & her endless calls to her friend Audrey. Sybil is a worthy opponent for Basil. Basil can be in full ranting flow, but one sharp - "Basil!" from Sybil is all it takes to bring him to a stand still. Sybil is a stranger to menial tasks, & believes her role is to socialise with the guests, ordering Basil around & humiliating him in public.


Polly is a waitress & general assistant who is really an art student, working to supplement her grant. She is the only sane one at Fawlty Towers. With an impressive ability to think on her feet & she is always on hand to help Basil out of his worse scrapes. Sometimes it's impersonating a poorly Sybil or explaining dead bodies hidden in laundry baskets. Basil wouldn't cope without her.


Manuel is a waiter from Barcelona who is a walking disaster! He was hired by Basil because he is cheap. Manuel's command of english is so slight the he finds it hard to tell the difference between the words "Sybil" & "the bill". Most of Basil's exasperated commands are met with a cry - "Que?"
